She previously served as organist at St. Andrew's Church in New York City, where she also hosted international guest artists. Her organ primary teachers were Nancy Granert, Matthew Lewis, and John Weaver.

As a composer, one of her focal points has been the string quartet medium. Her Prelude: Litany for string quartet has been performed in concert and used in church services in the United States and Europe. Her transcription of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations for string quartet has likewise served dual purposes. Lan has also transcribed works for organ, including works originally scored for string quartet. Lan studied composition with Lukas Foss and Andrew Thomas, conducting with Alan Gilbert, and counterpoint with Walter Hilse, with whom she also analyzed J.S. Bach's Art of Fugue. Lan also received a Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize for an analysis of Stravinsky's music.
