About

Iris Lan is an Asian American classical and liturgical musician.

As a composer, Lan has written and transcribed works for dual use in either concert or liturgical contexts.  One of her focal points has been the string quartet medium.  Her Prelude: Litany for string quartet has been performed in concert and used in church services in the United States and Europe.  Her transcription of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations for string quartet has likewise served dual purposes.  At the same time, Lan has also transcribed works for organ, including works originally scored for string quartet.  Lan studied composition with Lukas Foss and Andrew Thomas, conducting with Alan Gilbert, and counterpoint with Walter Hilse, with whom she also analyzed J.S. Bach's Art of Fugue.  Lan also received a Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize for an analysis of Stravinsky's music.

As an organist, Lan has given recitals across the United States and internationally, including in London at Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, Temple Church, and Westminster Cathedral. Lan has performed the complete solo sonatas by Paul Hindemith numerous times, including in New York City at St. Thomas Church 5th Avenue, Trinity Church Wall Street, and Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and in Washington, DC at St. John Lafayette Square and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  Her principal organ teachers have been Matthew Lewis and Nancy Granert, and she also studied Hindemith's sonatas with John Weaver and Terence Flanagan.

Lan is a regular guest musician for liturgical services, having served under the tutelage of David B. Lang (tlm), Ben Hutto, and Bill Roberts.  She was previously organist at St. Andrew's Church in New York City, where she also hosted international guest artists.
