LITANIES

The litany is a form of repetitive petitionary prayer.  In music, it often manifests itself as a theme that repeats in chant-like style.  Composer Jehan Alain featured this style in his canonical work for organ, Litanies.  After Alain's death in World War I, composer Maurice Duruflé wrote his Prelude & Fugue on the name ALAIN, Op. 7, as a tribute to Alain, invoking the theme from Alain's Litanies.  Iris Lan's recording of both organ works was featured as part of an exhibition at New York City's Equity Gallery, along with her composition, Prelude: Litany.
